You could have the best skincare products in the world, but if you're applying them in the wrong order, you're leaving results on the table. Layering is a science — and once you understand it, everything changes.
The Golden Rule: Thinnest to Thickest
Always apply products from the lightest consistency to the heaviest. This ensures each formula can penetrate properly without being blocked by a denser product sitting on top.
The Correct Order
1. Cleanser — Start with a clean canvas.
2. Toner — Rebalance and prep the skin.
3. Essence — A lightweight hydration boost that primes skin for actives.
4. Serums & Actives — Target specific concerns (vitamin C in the morning, retinol at night).
5. Eye Cream — The delicate eye area needs its own dedicated formula.
6. Moisturizer — Lock in all the layers beneath.
7. Face Oil (optional) — Seal everything in with a nourishing oil if your skin needs it.
8. SPF (morning only) — Always the final step in your AM routine.
Wait Time Between Layers
Give each product 30–60 seconds to absorb before applying the next. This is especially important with actives like vitamin C and retinol, which need direct skin contact to work effectively.
Don't Mix These
Some ingredients don't play well together. Avoid layering retinol with AHAs/BHAs in the same routine, and be cautious combining vitamin C with niacinamide if you have sensitive skin — use them at different times of day instead.
Mastering layering is one of the highest-impact changes you can make to your routine. Your skin will absorb more, perform better, and glow longer.
